THE PROJECT
This modern concrete apartment suite was inspired by the contemporary loft, incorporating both rustic and industrial architectural elements. The exposed brick walls and the overhead wooden beams of the ceiling allude to heritage architecture while its custom-built design provides a contemporary twist. The dark-stained wooden beams were constructed to provide contrast with the ceiling, lit by warm LEDs. The custom-built faux-brick wall creates a rustic feel to the space while the warm grey tones in the floor and drapery adds sophisticated modern elegancy. Other features are the angular coffee table and light fixtures, balancing out the space with industrial elements.
THE CHALLENGE
There two main technical challenges that we had to overcome: 1. Implementing the faux-brick panelling proved to be complex. In order to create the same textural impact that real brick provides, we had to hand-paint the grout between the bricks and meticulously cut out jagged edges for a ‘torn-down’ look. 2. The shallow space in the dropped ceiling proved difficult to install recessed down-lights, LED tape, and custom made exposed wooden beams. The wooden beams had to be individually cut and carefully angled in order to account for the uneven height in the dropped ceiling.
